General considerations
- Offer TASK™ as an entry- and exit-assessment: Besides allowing you to measure the evolution of students' sustainability knowledge, it also allows the student to get familiar with the platform and the assessment (rather than only assessing them once). The entry assessment may happen at the entry of the student in the program, or before the student is to learn about sustainability.
- Favour in-class testing: When TASK™ is offered within a class, or within the courses plan, the completion rate is higher. Work with program directors to find which spaces could be used to roll out TASK™ most effectively.
- Consider doing follow up assignments: Pedagogical theory highlights the importance of reflective exercises to consolidate learning, enable students to connect authentically with sustainability and encourage students to take action. Other active learning activities, for example peer-to-peer learning, are also encouraged.
- Consider offering participation points: Many community members find that offering 5% participation points for students completing TASK™ helps ensuring most students complete the assessment, offering the school a more complete data set.
General step-by-step
- Communicate the importance: Ensure students are well-informed about the benefits and purpose of TASK™. We have a great 2-minutes video and template emails here.
- Share preparatory materials: While many educators prefer a more “raw” assessment without specific preparation, others prefer their students to go into TASK™ more confident about what it will specifically cover. If you prefer the latter approach, you can share with them the Intro2TASK, a compilation of videos and interactive resources.
- Organise the entry-assessment: Working with professors and/or program directors, define the best timing to invite students in their first term to take TASK™. Aim to avoid busy periods such as exam weeks, so students can dedicate adequate time and care to the assessment. You may consider follow up assignments, as described above.
- Provide and refine opportunities for further learning: Refer students to extra-curricular activities they can engage in to improve their knowledge, while using the TASK™ insights to refine the curriculum and learning journey.
- Highlight the value of sustainability learning for employability: Prior to student’s graduation, highlight the importance of sustainability competencies for their career. For example, you can mention that the LinkedIn Green Skills report found that, between 2022 and 2023 alone, there was a 12.3% growth in the share of green talent in the workforce, and a 22.4% growth in the share of job postings requiring at least one green skill. Liaise with your Career and Alumni Relation departments in this effort.
- Organise the exit assessment: Working with professors and/or program directors, define the best timing to invite students to take TASK™ prior to graduation. While they have learnt aout sustainability through your courses, you are welcome to share the Intro2TASK as a refresher. You may consider offering follow up assignments and/or reflections.
- Compare, learn and iterate!: Sustainability education is an ongoing effort, and we hope TASK™ continues to help you refine your strategy. Comparing entry- and exit- scores, or the results of different cohorts, and connecting that with your understanding of the different programs students go through, enable you to understand what are the most impactful learning pathways and identify areas for opportunity.
